New Year’s Resolutions for Job Seekers

2020 has been a year unlike any other  and many job seekers are likely happy the year is coming to an end. The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has impacted the global job market, and it has caused global organizations to furlough or lay off workers. In addition, the pandemic has led job seekers to fall short of achieving their New Year’s resolutions.

Although the pandemic is ongoing, 2021 is right around the corner, and better things may be in store for the new year. As such, job seekers may want to consider the following New Year’s resolutions, so these individuals can put themselves in position to land their dream job in 2021:

  1. Update Your Resume

Take a look at your resume and consider what you have accomplished over the course of the pandemic. If you learned new skills or completed online certification or training programs, you should update your resume accordingly. You can add professional references and update your portfolio as well.

Tailor your resume to any job you pursue in 2021. By providing a custom resume to each potential employer, you can show your interest in a particular role. Plus, you can use your resume to distinguish yourself from other applicants and boost your likelihood of securing your ideal job.

  1. Grow Your Professional Network

Engage with past and current work colleagues via LinkedIn. This allows you to grow your professional network, and it could help you stay connected with industry experts who can put you in touch with prospective employers.

Take advantage of virtual career fairs and networking events in 2021, too. These events allow you to further expand your professional network and move one step closer toward a successful career.

  1. Organize Your Home Office

Tidy up your home office and keep it neat going forward. Remove clutter from your home office and ensure your workspace allows you to avoid distractions and maximize your productivity.

In addition to cleaning up your home office, spend some time removing clutter from your computer. Eliminate any unnecessary files or folders from your desktop and back up critical information in the cloud or on a USB drive.

  1. Make a List of Target Organizations(and Reach Out to Them)

Figure out what you want to do and where you want to work. Then, perform research into your target industry and potential employers and keep an eye out for any job opportunities with these organizations.

It can be beneficial to reach out to your target organizations to share your interest with them. Once an organization knows you are interested in any vacancies that become available, the organization may reach out to you if it believes you may be a good fit for a specific role.
